To change the size of the icons in the activity Tab, you need to customize the file /usr/share/gnome-shell/theme/gnome-shell.css.
open the file in gedit or any text editor you like
sudo gedit /usr/share/gnome-shell/theme/gnome-shell.css
the following section describes the icon size and table structure.
spacing: 36px;
-shell-grid-item-size: 118px;
}
.icon-grid .overview-icon {
icon-size: 96px;
}
so to reduce the size of the table , you need to change the entries spacing and -shell-grid-item-size
to reduce the size change the values as follows
.icon-grid {
spacing: 25px;
-shell-grid-item-size: 50px;
}
.icon-grid .overview-icon {
icon-size: 50px;
}
Choose values according to your displaY resolution.

ReplyDeleteI got a crash in the gnome-shell process when I tried this, after I logged out and back in. Icon size seems to be unchanged after the process auto-restarted. Am sending crash report as I type this.
ReplyDeleteThis works great for changing the icons in the activities->applications tab. However, it does not change the icons in the activities->dashboard (the menu on the left side). Any idea which css class controls the icons in the dashboard? Thanks.

For changing the gnome 3 dash icon size:
ReplyDeleteIt is not in the gnome-shell.css but in /usr/share/gnome-shell/js/ui/dash.js on line 767 let iconSizes = [ 16, 22, 24, 32, 48, 64 ]; Just removed the way too big sizes (so dropped 48 and 64) and it looks fine.
Is there any way to customize the size of the icons in the mgse top-panel? in my case the icons are bigger than the panel which looks awful...
ReplyDeleteAnd a second question: my run dialog when pressing alt+f2 is lost, under classic gnome it works but under gnome 3 with mgse it's gone - don't know why, worked until yesterday.
thanks alot
I lost Alt-F2 also. Here's what I did. Load System Settings, then Keyboard (or just run Keyboard directly). Go to the Shortcuts tab. Choose "System" on the left list. Look on the right at the item "Show the run command prompt". If it says "Disabled" then click on that word until you see "new shortcut..." then type Alt-F2.
ReplyDelete@practic: thanks alot, that did the trick.
ReplyDeleteThanks! Hating Gnome 3 a little less each day!
ReplyDeletereally great, thanks for info
